Herbert Engineering Corp Releases Carbon Footprint Study for Port of Seattle

Alameda, CA – Herbert Engineering Corp has released a carbon footprint study for the Port of Seattle that estimates the total carbon footprint of an intermodal shipment of containers from Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore to Chicago, Columbus, and Memphis through the North American ports at Prince Rupert, Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, Norfolk, and New York. This study investigates the greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane) from combustion machinery on both containerships and locomotives for their respective legs of the shipment. Containership sizes ranging from 4,500 TEU Panamax to 12,500 TEU New Panamax were used for the marine portion of the journey. East Coast vessels were routed through the Panama and Suez Canals to represent both current and future canal size allowances.

The results of the study suggest that containers destined for the Midwest and transported through ports on the West Coast of North America have a smaller greenhouse gas emissions footprint than those moved through East Coast ports. This conclusion is unchanged even after the expected 2014 Panama Canal expansion. The emissions advantage is largely a function of the different ocean distances from Asia to the ports in North America and the relative difference in emissions from ships and intermodal rail.
