Our firm provides a range of offshore engineering support services. |
|
| Our offshore engineering capabilities build off our extensive experience in the design of innovative ships. Members of our staff have broad experience in the design and analysis of a variety of floating offshore structures including semisubmersibles, tension leg platforms, FPSOs and ancillary systems including mooring systems. Our capabilities range from structural design and analysis to investigation of intact and damage stability to nonlinear motions analysis of floating structures. Recent experience has included design and evaluation of LNG carriers and LNG loading and receiving terminals, both floating and fixed to the seabed. An FPSO for which we performed the concept design was recently installed offshore West Africa. |
| Our engineers are highly experienced in design and analysis of stiffened-plate structures and particularly in the design of fatigue-resistant connection details. We have intimate knowledge of efficient ship construction techniques from our close relationship with both domestic and foreign shipbuilders. This knowledge has proved to be easily translated to the offshore industry in the preparation of efficient designs and specifications for the economical yet robust fabrication of floating offshore structures. A recent addition to our staff brings advanced hydrodynamic and CFD analysis capabilities to HEC. This capability includes the accurate determination of wave forces on ships and offshore structures, motions analysis of floating vessels, seakeeping and survivability analysis and determination of the resistance and maneuverability of ships. |
| Concept Design of Gravity Base LNG Terminal | |
| For a US client, HEC performed concept-level design of a Steel GBS for use as an LNG receiving terminal. Scope of work included parametric studies, determination of wave loadings using a modified diffraction method, development of primary structure, evaluation of shipyard fabrication and transportation and estimating total installed cost. | ![]() |
| Conceptual design of FPSO for Offshore West Africa | |

UK based client, HEC performed the pre-FEED concept design of a VLCC-sized FPSO hull. HEC's extent of services included preparation of two sets of designs, one for a double hull and the other for a single bottom/double sided structure. Work included finite element analysis of topside module supports. |
| FPSO Mooring Turret Concept Design | ||
| For a Japanese client, HEC designed the mooring turret for a deepwater FPSO. This vessel, the subject of a research and development project, supports a workover rig that accesses production wells through compliant rigid pipe risers supported at the turret. The turret provided an innovative geostationary platform for supporting the risers and housing the mooring system, while allowing passive unrestrained weathervaning about the vessels vertical axis in response to changing winds, waves, and currents. Services included concept-level design, vendor contacts and preliminary specification of vendor supplied equipment, finite element analysis, drawing preparation, and procurement and fabrication cost estimating. | ![]() |

| Offshore Platform Load Management Software |
| For the Marlin and three other Tension Leg Platforms, HEC developed the Load Management software that allows platform-based operations staff to maintain platform weight and center of gravity within allowable parameters. |
| Fatigue Loads Analysis |
| For a unique petroleum transportation vessel, developed the fatigue loads on tank supports utilizing a modified spectral approach that included the effects of ship hull distortion, vessel motions and vessel accelerations. |
